Response To:“Only after you have been to Europe and America Will you value Taiwan more.”〈去過歐美才知應更珍惜台灣〉

This shall constitute my response to the above-referenced article recently
forwarded to me by Dr. K.C. Hsu & other friends. In it there are some view points
expressed and impression made on a traveler on his trip to and back from Europe &
USA.

There apparently are some “culture shocks” confronting, perplexing or troubling
the traveler. One can hardly imagine and expect to meet with these shocks one
experiences, especially when one is entering from an under-developed, or a
developing country into a highly-developed one, or vice versa.

But from time to time what a traveler observes when visiting a foreign country
may be superficial or superfluous. Indeed, there have been usually some
complimentary meals, snacks on a plane or some free services offered at a filling
station. These are gone now. Besides, there may be some buildings in poor shape, no
newly-furnished seats on the plane, the author found. It is all right to assert that
America is having economic recession. People in America are adapting to the life
sluggish economy brought to them recently. But it does not necessarily signify that
“America is facing retardation or losing vitality.”

In a way, we can find that average American businessmen are reasonable and
flexible. Of course, good service for customers is one of their top concerns. The
downgrade of services sometimes reflects the cost of a business. They will not be
stupid enough to “kill a chicken simply out of a desire for its eggs.” However, brilliant
and farsighted as they are, some CEO’s and CFO’s of corporations with lucrative
business, inclusive of the airlines will never fail to put their personal profit ahead of
other important concerns. This may explain in part the situations in which some rather
unsatisfactory services still exist.

It is certainly true that there used to be some free and great flight services on a
plane flying in Southeast and Northeast Asias. One of the reasons could be that there
was/has been a very keen competition between airlines in these regions. Following
their different business philosophy is often the case with the Oriental businessmen,
providing good service to passengers. And their mentality is “More sales can make up
for the barely marginal profit of each sale. -『薄利多銷』。” However, the mere
stupidity and stubbornness of Western businessmen can not possibly persuade
themselves to do the same.

Like the rest of Asian countries, Taiwan has been in progress in economics,
commerce, or hi-tech, etc. during the past decades. With GDP increasing, the living
standard is rising. Therefore, it makes sense that travelers from Taiwan will
relatively expect a good or even better service wherever they go. They will feel
frustrated when they find the situation beyond their expectations.

It is a bit exaggerating to describe the US government as run by “rascals”, or
industries managed by “robbers.” It is indeed true, however, America is controlled by
some educated, talented and privileged few.

Not that “people in America seem to be independent and look forward”, but that
they have to be. If you are helped by someone, it is looked upon as a courtesy, a grace
or a blessing. I am afraid that’s the way things are here in America.

Influenced by financial crises occurring in some European countries such as
Greece, Italy or Spain, Europe is facing an unprecedented trouble. As part of the
global economy, one country’s economy is likely to be dragged down by another’s.
Therefore, it is safer to infer that even though France and Germany rank top of the
countries with better economy and finance, they can not stay out of the messy trouble
in today’s Europe. Neither will USA be. Naturally, should these imminent problems
be under control and coped with successfully in Europe, some subsequent peril, as Dr.
Peter Diamond (a Nobel prize-winner) put it, may hopefully be avoided in America
and elsewhere, Asia included. Well, people can not somehow forget about the
prosperity they once lived in. But they may ignore one thing- “things really have
changed, unfortunately.”

    各國各地經過不同的歷史過程,政經發展,內外交流,本土人文等因素造成各國各地今天的不同,如要説文化衝擊,正是旅遊的目的之一,不只是看名山勝水,體會當地文化歷史和生活也是旅遊的一大誘因,能互相比較了解各地不同是旅遊的收獲。

    旅遊各地後比較各國好壞是不可避免,就看好壞標準點在那裡,而這些比較都是有統計性的一般而言,一桿子打番一條船,所以我們會結論:美國人比台灣人會排隊,而台灣人比大陸人會排隊,但我們當然可以找到美國人不排隊的個案,如今年感恩節後為搶購而噴辣椒霧;同樣我在大陸也體會到好好排隊的個案。

    這些群眾的習慣規範,會與時更改而行成當地的共識習慣。君不見柏陽數十年的短文笑稱美國是亞美利堅排隊國,他到美國對老美的排隊文化大受震驚,乃為文要我們台灣同胞學老美。轉眼數十年,今天的台灣人很會排隊,而對大陸人的不排隊不滿,而有些大陸人也感到台灣排隊文化的衝擊,疾呼大陸要改進排隊文明。

    這些文明行為好懷,端看個人適應性和原已適應的環境做為標準來相比,而個人的經歷是有限的。旅遊時時間不夠,有時會以一個或兩個親身體會的個案就下結論,所謂一斑窺豹。我九月到杭州看印象西湖,後坐一排來自朴子的老鄉,開演前他鄉碰同鄉,就聊起來。開演後,可能因為表演過於抽象,我剛認識的鄉親就台上一齣表演,台下一齣互相討論,一個説某一景不知演啥碗糕,另一個就嘗試詮釋,第三個再加註解,不顧其他觀眾花錢是要聽喜多郎的音樂, 不是來聽他們討論詮釋。因為他們是用台語,我想一些觀眾可能就驟下結論台灣人看表演就是這樣子。所以旅遊時若不是較深入涉入觀察體驗,有時按一兩個不愉快的經驗就形成全面的判斷是不可取的。

    不論如何,多旅遊是好的,滿足自我的好奇心,和人聊天也多了話題;如能嚴肅地借他山之石來攻錯,或感受出遊完回家的溫暖,這旅遊就更有收穫了。
