Dear Teacher,
“At seventy, I could follow what my heart desired, without transgressing what was right”(「七十而從心所欲,不踰矩」)”, said by Confucius. Your opinion on Fortune-Telling and comparing the different views between the oriental and western world is incisive and brilliant.
The different views between the oriental and western world come from different culture and religions. Most western people believe in Christianity. If one have a chance to walk below the footpath in front of the bottom of Niagara Falls and sense the spectacular and shocking scenery, one will feel how small and tiny a human being is. There must be a God creating the world. In contrast, most oriental people are affected by Confucianism, Buddhism or Taoism since childhood. Recently, I have visited Turkey and saw the whirling dance or Sufi whirling that is part of a formal ceremony known as the Sama. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJIofU-0jC0) The Sema represents a mystical journey of man's spiritual ascent through mind and love to the "Perfect". Turning towards the truth, the follower grows through love, deserts his ego, finds the truth, and arrives at the "Perfect". He then returns from this spiritual journey as a man who has reached maturity and a greater perfection, able to love and to be of service to the whole of creation. The Muslim will have another view or way on the Fortune-Telling for sure.
Thank to the globalization, people in Taiwan easily access all kinds of Fortune-Telling theories, whether they are oriental or western. Most Taiwanese people are smart, and consult each way; they take the one which is most favorable. To me, confidence is most important. I believe in “where there's a will there's a way” (有志者事竟成) and “As the way of a person’s thinking changes, so does that of his look of features.「相隨心轉」. It is interesting that different thinking can results in different conclusion on the same issue, as shown in the attached file. Notwithstanding, how about our fate? I really don’t know.
Best,
KC Hsu
